air filters should be replaced as part of routine home maintenanceIf there’s a frequent excuse given for why homeowners don’t do a better job of maintaining their homes, my guess is that “I have no time” is near the top.  In truth, many of the simplest home maintenance tasks can be done in less than an hour.  Here are 5 things you can do to keep your home clean, safe and healthy and prevent bigger repairs down the line.

1. Change your furnace filters. Imagine trying to drink through a straw when there is some obstruction in it – you have to work harder, and yet you get less of your drink in your mouth.  Your heating and air conditioning systems fight the same battle when the air filters on the intake vents are clogged with dust.  Replacing the air filters takes less than 10 minutes in most cases, but can help extend the life of your mechanical systems significantly (not to mention improve the air quality in your home!)

2. Oil a squeaky door hinge. Whether it’s your closet door that squeaks so loud it wakes your spouse up, or the garage door that rattles the house every time it goes up or down, squeaky hinges are plain annoying.  Thankfully, the remedy is so simple.  For interior doors, tap the hinge pin out slightly, then put a few drops of a basic household oil in to the hinge.  For a garage door, lubricate all the wheels and hinges with the appropriate grease. A common misconception is that WD-40 will work when in fact it is not a lubricant. It can be used to clean up, but use a lubricant after.
