Redesigning a single room is more common than updating an entire home, which explains why staircases often go overlooked behind new wall colors, furnishings and accessories. However, there are many ways to spruce up dull steps to match the updated style of the rest of the home. Consider these six options for a modernized and stylish stairwell.
Create a dynamic staircase with colorful paint. This is a great option for homeowners who want to change up the style of the stairs but don’t like the look or feel of a carpet runner. The materials needed for this project include paint/primer, a tape measure, pencil, painter’s tape and an angle. Use tape to outline vertical stripes and create flow down the staircase. Or, opt for a two-tone look between the treads and risers.
2. Apply Wallpaper
Walls aren’t the only place for patterns and prints. Dress up stair risers with a fresh wallpaper design. Application is a little trickier than the standard wallpaper project. First, be sure the pattern repeats itself on each step creating a symmetrical look. The paper can be applied with standard wallpaper paste, but use plastic coverings to avoid spills on the stair tread. Consider covering finished paper with acrylic panels to add a glossy overcoat and prevent damage due to foot traffic.
