So you want to renovate your home? Where do you start?
You start with figuring out exactly what you want to renovate. Are you doing just the bathrooms, or the kitchen or the entire house?
Are you going to put any additions on?
What is the connection between home renovations and refinancing? Many times refinancing your home can be the easiest way to get your home renovations done all at once. Make sure you look for and compare the best home loan rates available before filling out any applications.
If you are planning for an upgrade or addition, then the best time to do it is when you do the renovating. This way, you will not have to worry about going through the process of finding money, contractors, or making a mess twice. It is best to take care of everything at once.
Getting an Estimate, or Several
Now you need estimates of what it is going to cost to do your renovations. You will have to contact your local construction companies or contractors and such to get the information you need. I recommend getting several estimates. Don’t take the first estimate you get at face value. Shop around for the best prices and then decide.
There are several questions you will need to ask the contractors before you chose one and they are important:
- Are they licensed and insured to work in your area?
- Are the permits included in the bid?
- Will they give you a written estimate and contract?
- Are lien wavers for suppliers and sub contractors included?
- Do they have references?
- What about changes? Will they be included?
You want to make sure that all of these questions are answered to your satisfaction, before you make any decisions on a contractor. If they cannot or will not agree to them, I suggest that you keep looking. Mold and mildew could be an issue when renovating bathrooms. I recommend making sure that this issue is addressed with your contractor as well to make sure that it will be taken care of and is included in your contract.
