Building a Custom Closet – Installation

Using the blueprints you made from custom closet plans  and the materials you purchased using the information you found in the closet supply list, you are now ready to build your custom closet. If you are not starting with a blank closet, you’ll want to deconstruct the old one, fix any holes, and prime and paint the walls.

If you are using MDF it’s important to use a pilot hole for every screw.

Master closet PartitionUsing your charted plans draw the placement of everything on the walls of your closet with a pencil. Add marks where the Simpson angles will be by referencing the photo to the right. Most marks will be covered during construction. Any that aren’t can be erased or painted over when finished.

  1. Before you cut any other pieces you’ll want to cut the partitions to the proper length and install them.  This will allow you to get accurate shelf measurements.
  2. Secure Simpson ties to the wall using size 8, 1″ screws.
  3. Place partitions in front of secured Simpson ties as shown in the photo.  Attach the ties to the partitions using size 8, 1/2″ long  screws.
