Screen Tight Porch Screening System Review

March 4, 2014 by Becky Alexander-Conrad

My hubby has talked about living in the country for as long as I’ve known him. I’ve been crazy about Victorian style homes with covered porches since I was a child. When we found land in the country, it seemed fitting to build a Victorian Revival home with a covered porch on it. Which is just what we did. And yet we wanted more.

This is not a paid review. We started with the idea of having a typical Victorian porch with turned posts and sawn balustrades. Before we finished doing that we happened upon a, new to us, screened in porch system by Screen Tight. Both Home Depot and Lowe’s carry it.

Their system includes base and cap, screws, screen fabric, spline and spline roller tool.  The only other tools you’ll need to install the system are a measuring tape, scissors, a rubber mallet and a power drill or screwdriver.  You’ll also need lumber, hand or power saw, nails and a hammer or power nail gun for framing. Below is a somewhat before picture as we never got to cutting the sawn balusters before we changed our minds.

Review: Mohu Leaf Antenna for HDTV

November 18, 2013 by Tyler Golberg

Testing the Antennas

Looking to replace your old antenna for a better TV experience? Mohu has two great options to bring HD into your home: the Leaf Ultimate (39.99) and the Sky (149.99). The Leaf is an ultra thin antenna for the indoors while the Sky is designed for outdoor use. I tested both for ease of installation, performance, and aesthetics.

Out on the Porch

October 21, 2013 by chuck

PorchWhile the hot summer has quickly turned to the cooler fall, most of us won’t be spending much more time out on our respective porches this year.  There is however, a new kind of porch that you can spend time on.  I recently checked out a new online site and wanted to share with readers here.  This porch is a new resource for both homeowners and contractors online called Porch.com.  Porch is a start-up company using big data to make an impact on the home improvement sector.  The Seattle based company launched their online product in September, 2013 and has compiled data on nearly 100 million home improvement projects through out the United States. These data points are represented by colored pins on a map.  Click on the pin and learn more about a particular neighborhood.  It is pretty intuitive and gathering a 100 million home projects is pretty impressive in and of itself!

What can homeowners do on the Porch website?

A number of activities including:
  • -Discover what your neighbors are doing with their house (simply explore what’s under the map pins).
  • -Learn what home improvement contractors your neighbors have used.
  • -Plan home improvement projects.
  • -Learn about home improvement.
  • -Get ideas and inspiration about home improvement.
  • -Interact with other interested in home improvement within your neighborhood and beyond.
  • -Share data on projects they have done on their home

Product Review: SimpliSafe Security System

April 8, 2013 by Tyler Golberg

Finding Security

Home security is very real concern for many homeowners. It can mean safeguarding valuables while on vacation, protecting against a leaking appliance, or protecting a family from intruders. Security can mean many things for a home, but what is it worth?

Idea Behind SimpliSafe

Traditional security systems tend to be pushy, overpriced, and too long of a commitment. I’ve personally used this type of setup in my own home. The system worked fine enough (no better or worse than SimpliSafe), but having to commit to 2 year contract (i.e. most are at least a 1 year contract) sucks. What if the support is lacking or the system keeps malfunctioning (happened multiple times for me)?

The idea behind SimpliSafe is an easy DIY installation security system with no contract.
