HomeSpot How-to: Gmail Calendar Feed

In this installment of HomeSpot How-to, we’ll show you how to publish your HomeSpot project and reminder alerts to your Gmail calendar.  This feature is a direct outcome of our users giving us feedback on how we can improve HomeSpot, and we continue to incorporate user suggestions in to the products design and feature set.  If you have an idea for how we can make HomeSpot even more useful a tool for managing the information about your homes, please let us know at support@homespothq.com.

Every time you add a Project or Maintenance Task to your HomeSpot account, you can set a ‘due date’ for when that item should be completed.  If you’re like many people who also maintain a calendar of appointments and other events, seeing these items on that calendar becomes another way to keep yourself aware of the things to do around your home.  In this tutorial, we’ll specifically show how to subscribe to your HomeSpot calendar through Gmail, but it should also work with Outlook and Apple’s iCal app.

Step 1: Enable calendar publishing in HomeSpot.

After logging on to your HomeSpot account, click on the ‘My Account’ link in the upper right hand corner.

Click on the ‘Reminder’s tab, then make sure that the ‘Publish my calendar’ option is checked.

Click the ‘Save’ button to update your account settings.

Step 2: Copy your Calendar Feed Url

The full, secure Url to your calendar feed is shown above the ‘Publish my calendar’ option.  Highlight this Url, and press Ctrl-C (Windows) or Command-C (Mac) to copy the Url to the clipboard.

Step 3: Log in to your Gmail Account and open your Calendar

After logging on to your Gmail account, open your Calendar using the link in the upper left portion of the page.

Step 4: Subscribe to your HomeSpot calendar feed.

Along the left column of the Gmail calendar, you’ll see a section titled ‘Other Calendars’ with an ‘Add’ link.

Click on the ‘Add’ link, then select ‘Add by URL’

In the dialog that pops up, paste the Calendar Feed Url you copied from the My Account page in HomeSpot.

Click the ‘Add Calendar’ button to add the new subscription to your account.  You should see a status message that says ‘Importing from url…’ at the top of the page.

Note: You may notice that the newly added Calendar entry in the ‘Other Calendars’ section is named with some unintelligible string of characters.  You can easily clean this up by clicking on the ‘Settings’ link, then clicking on the link representing the calendar feed.  You’ll see a ‘Name’ field, where you can replace the system generated name with something far more meaningful like ‘HomeSpot HQ Reminders’.

Your new calendar feed should now be all set.  It’s best if you change to a Month view to see the upcoming reminders from HomeSpot.  You can also change the color of the entries by clicking the ‘down arrow’ shown on the calendar entry and selecting a new color.

As you add or update your HomeSpot projects and reminders, their new dates will automatically be reflected on your Gmail calendar. It is a great way to stay on top of the constant care for your home.
