Other questions you might have
Do popcorn ceilings have asbestos in them?
Not necessarily. The EPA banned the use of asbestos for use in ceiling paint in 1977. If your home was built after this time, it is unlikely that there is asbestos in your popcorn ceiling. It is worth having it tested if the ceiling was constructed before 1978. If there is asbestos present, you’ll need to hire a service that specializes in its removal.
How much does it cost to get rid of popcorn ceiling?
For a professional service it will be approximately $1-2 per square foot to get rid of popcorn ceiling. That is just the removal process. It will cost extra to have the ceiling textured and/or painted after the cleanup. If you decide to go the DIY route, it is fairly cheap as the tools are very affordable.
What is the point of a popcorn ceiling?
It works very well to cover up imperfections in the ceiling and dampen noise. Despite these traits, it has largely fallen out of popularity as it is not as aesthetically pleasing. Its downfall could also be attributed to its earlier link to asbestos.
