I have a hard time defacing books but I had to make a sacrifice for this project. It was a little easier when I realized all the different uses for hollowed books (more on that later). Plus, it is an easy DIY project with minimal cost.
I picked out a pretty normal sized hardcover book for a couple bucks at a consignment shop. Make sure it is thick enough to hold whatever items you have it mind. Once you have a book, the first step is to glue the pages together.
Before getting started, wrap the front cover of the book along with at least the first page in plastic wrap to protect it from the glue. Mix the Mod Podge with water in a small bowl (i.e. no more than 50% water) and mix it together. Use a small sponge or paint brush to start applying the glue to the pages. Go around the perimeter of the pages several times to ensure the glue is soaking in beyond the surface. You do not need to glue in between each individual page as it will soak in far enough from applying at the edge. Place a heavy weight on top of the book to compress the pages and wait for at least an hour.
