Ceramic Tile

ceramic roof tileCeramic tile roofs are among the most expensive on the market, but they are also very durable and have a lifespan of up to 80 years. This means that homeowners with ceramic tile roofs will only have to install the roof once, and very little maintenance is required. The tiles are molded and baked, and they are coated with a glaze that makes them waterproof. Ceramic tile roofs are common in Mediterranean-style homes that are often built in warmer climates, but they are also suitable for northern homes. Ceramic tiles cost approximately $4 per square foot.

According to the Tile Roofing Institute, Ceramic tiles are the only roofing materials that have natural thermal resistance, due to the large cross-sectional areas of the tiles when they are installed. Also, since the ceramic tiles are laid down one-by-one next to each other, the spaces between them allow for ventilation that provides a thermal barrier for heat transfer. The result of this “above sheathing ventilation” is a sizable reduction in heat flux transfer when compared to asphalt shingles.
